Stand On My Shoulders

I've gone about as far as I can.  I'm gettin' real wore down.

My walk has not been easy. When it's my time, I'm heaven bound.

With the smiles and laughter, there have been tears and frowns.

I need to share some things with you, next time you come around.

Stand on my shoulders before I have to leave.

What I never figured out, maybe you can clearly see.

I'm slowing down now, and you're just picking up speed.

So stand on my shoulders and get farther than me.

Your granddaddy always told me, life is not all pleasure.

He fought his own battles, way too many to measure.

When he talked about his family, he said that was his greatest treasure.

He didn't live a perfect life, but he made me this one gesture. He said,

Stand on my shoulders before I have to leave.

What I never figured out, maybe you can clearly see.

I'm slowing down now, and you're just picking up speed.

So stand on my shoulders and get farther than me.

One day hopefully many years from today,

When your back is sore, your hands are rough, and your hair is mostly gray,

You'll pass along things you've learned, and a few of the mistakes you made

to another generation, when you look in their eyes and say,

Stand on my shoulders before I have to leave.

What I never figured out, maybe you can clearly see.

I'm slowing down now, and you're just picking up speed.

So stand on my shoulders and get farther than me.
