Little Dribblers
Coach Taylor's Little Dribblers program encouraged kids, and changed lives. As parents, Terri and I knew that having Jeff around our children would be a good thing, but I couldn't have known how good. In the Fall of 2009, WIll was a 4th grader at Farrar elementary. He was small for a 4th
grader, and he tried out for basketball.
When the season started, they had fifteen kids on the team.
Will came running over to me before the first Saturday morning game, and said, all excited…Dad, I’m 3rd string ! I said that’s great! We can’t wait to see you play! He sprinted back over to his team. With that many kids, the second and third teams didn't get much playing time. During the
same winter, Will joined the Little Dribblers with Coach Taylor. At Little Dribblers, every kid learned
ball handling skills, team drills, and how to listen up when Coach was
talking. And each child had a bible
verse on their new t-shirt that they wanted to wear every day to school. When Will was in the fourth grade, in Little
Dribblers, he learned to spin a basketball on his finger.
He was pretty good at the other drills too. During the halftime show at the high school, the Little Dribblers performed their routine. There was a point in the routine that everybody stopped, and spun the ball on their finger. Balls went flying everywhere. One kid, in the middle of the court, was standing still, and had the ball spinning. It kept going, and going. Everybody cheered and clapped for all the kids, and Will smiled big, and his eyes lit up. He knew he was good at something. His friends, even some of the starters on the Farrar team, asked him how to do that. Coach Taylor helped Will, and a lot of children find something they were good at, and find their place to fit in.
